Where to start?
Veligandu Island has plenty of beach resorts for a perfect island getaway for great food, music, and bars nearby. The low bungalows will keep you in the shade during the hottest times of the day while enjoying the skyline. If you’re looking for something more active, go down for a swim and see the aquatic life swimming right alongside you from the reefs.
Alimatha Island is famous for its splendid dive sites, so much that it’s protected by government sanctions. The easy access to the colorful coral and rare marine life there make it a perfect place to start as it accommodates divers of all levels. You’ll find yourself swimming with nurse sharks and rays, which are people friendly. If snorkelling is more your deal, Alimatha also has excellent locations with shallower waters.
Maldives isn’t without its share of famous landmarks. A chance for a quieter break within the thriving capital is found at the Old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy), the oldest mosque from the 17th century. Intricate geometric carvings and Quranic script have been chiselled into its white coral and limestone walls. Surrounding the mosque is a graveyard and mausoleums, but don’t let that spook you. Many are beautifully carved stones and include the tombs of old sultans.
